Victron Orion XS: charge on the move, size it properly
Meet the 50A, 70A and 1400 DC-DC chargers, allow enough alternator headroom, and understand the new emergency reverse-charge feature.

A good auxiliary-battery system should make useful use of your driving time. Victron’s Orion XS range provides controlled DC-DC charging for a camper, 4×4, work vehicle or boat, with settings that let the installer match the charger to the batteries and charging source.
The newer Orion XS 12/12-70A recently arrived at Thanda and that stock has now sold out. Our next stock is expected in January 2027. This is our stock update for 23 October 2026; contact our Ballito team for the latest position and shipment timing.
Which Orion XS suits the system?
A DC-DC charger takes power from the vehicle’s charging system and applies a controlled charging profile to the auxiliary battery. The Orion XS range includes three models, with Bluetooth configuration through VictronConnect and support for conventional and smart alternator installations.
| Model | Nominal battery systems | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Orion XS 12/12-50A | 12V to 12V | Up to 50A charging; IP65 enclosure |
| Orion XS 12/12-70A | 12V to 12V | Up to 70A charging; fan-cooled, IP20 enclosure |
| Orion XS 1400 | 12V / 24V combinations | Up to 1,400W, with 50A input and output limits; IP65 enclosure |
Sources: Victron’s range datasheet and 1400 specifications. Available power depends on the operating voltages and current limits. The 70A model needs a dry, protected indoor mounting location; its enclosure rating differs from the other two models.
Give the alternator enough headroom
Check that the alternator can sustain the additional load before fitting an Orion XS, especially the 70A. The alternator also supplies the vehicle’s own electrical loads and replenishes the starter battery. Headlights, ventilation, demisting and other equipment all use part of the available capacity.
Our advice is to size against the spare continuous capacity under the conditions in which you will actually charge. An alternator’s nameplate rating alone leaves important questions unanswered: what can it deliver when hot, and what remains available at idle? Victron’s troubleshooting guidance identifies insufficient alternator power, low idle output and heat as reasons full charging performance may be unavailable.
The XS has separately adjustable input-current and output-current limits. Set the input limit to a load the charging system can comfortably support, and the output limit to suit the auxiliary battery and installation. On the 70A model, both can be configured from 1A to 70A. Input limits, conversion losses and the two battery voltages can constrain the charging output.
Have the installer assess the complete arrangement: alternator duty, vehicle-maker requirements, cable runs, fusing, mounting and battery charge limits. A lower configured current can be the appropriate choice for a particular vehicle. The aim is dependable charging over the journey, with enough capacity left for the vehicle itself.
New firmware: emergency reverse charging
Victron’s 24 September firmware announcement adds a useful recovery feature across the Orion XS range. With Orion XS firmware v1.15 and VictronConnect v6.43 or later, the charger can temporarily send energy from the auxiliary battery back to a depleted starter battery.
Start the function from VictronConnect when the charger is in charger mode and its normal forward charging has stopped under the permitted conditions. The sequence is:
- Activate emergency reverse charge using the engine-starter icon in the app.
- The Orion XS charges the starter battery for 15 minutes.
- Start the engine when the app shows Battery ready, during the following five-minute window with the charger disabled.
The maximum reverse current is half the model’s rated current, further limited by the configured current limits: up to 35A on the 70A model. A usable auxiliary battery is needed, and a damaged starter battery may still need assistance. This transfers charge before cranking; recovery is not guaranteed.
Follow the current manual for your installation. With multiple Orion XS chargers in parallel, start reverse charging on all of them or switch the others off as instructed, so that they do not charge against each other.
Choose the charger and local support together
Tell our Ballito team your vehicle or vessel, alternator specification, starter and auxiliary battery voltages, battery type and the loads you want to run. We can help identify the model and the questions your installer should settle before commissioning.
If you are waiting for the 70A, ask about the expected January stock and confirm timing before planning an installation around it. Our focus is a charger configured for your complete system, backed by local advice and support.
